So, I think this is my favorite city so far. The architecture, the history, the greenery, the food…. And the people…. so kind and welcoming… with that charming drawl! Everything you might imagine from a Southern city.
We started with a walking historical tour. We covered a lot of ground. We learned that the houses were built with a “false” front door that faced the street, but really opened onto a large side veranda where the real front door to the house was located. Apparently it kept the street dirt from getting into the house. Also, a lot of the houses were fitted with long metal tie-rods going from one outer wall to the other, so that when earthquakes or hurricanes made the houses a bit off kilter, they could be tightened up and the house could be straightened and made good as new(?)…. Weird.
Gorgeousness everywhere you look!
Even the beach detritus was pretty….red roses sprinkled among the beach grass.
And the food…. Wow. It is delicious. Like these fried green tomatoes.
And this bbq…. Complete with collard greens and a rib on top of the sandwich!
And then, after a harrowing bike ride thru industrial Charleston, we were treated to this at The Codfather Proper Fish and Chips. Mushy peas!!! So yummy!
After all of that touring around and eating, we had a harrowing night when the (expected) weather came in. Strong gusts, thunder, lightning, the boat rocking and rolling against the dock… and to top it all off… a tornado warning. Right over our marina! It lasted for several hours, then calmed back down. But wow, it was a bit nerve-wracking!
And in the morning, there was this… Life is good.
Deb and we’re in Charleston April 8-10 for the start of a week long family vacation on Pawleys Island. Glad your having a good trip!
